The 2008 Caps Care Classic charity golf tournament at Springfield Golf & Country Club on Oct. 6 raised more than $175,000 for Children's National Medical Center and the Washington Capitals Charities, topping the $1 million mark for total money raised by the annual event.

Philip Ahn of Potomac, MD and Tyler Koch of Issue, MD took the two championship trophies in the 2nd Charley Ridgway Junior conducted today at Bowie Golf & Country Club. Ahn recorded 41-39--80 for a three shot margin over Brendan Peel (42-41--83) of Potomac, MD and Jonathan Carr (44-39) of Rockville, MD in the 12-13 age group. Koch registered a nine-hole tally of 41 to edge Mason Short (44) of Waldorf, MD in the 10-11 category.

Jason Cage earned the medal at Argyle Country Club in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship, returning a bogey-free round of 33-35--68 to lead a field of 104 starters who were in search of seven places in the title-event on a mild, sunny and breezy day. Cage, from Baltimore and Chestnut Ridge Country Club, qualified for the championship last year, but admitted he had not been playing well this seasaon. "It all seemed to come together," he said of a round that ended with birdie putts of 10 and 12 feet at Nos. 4 and 8, respectively, and 16 pars, by-products of driving it straight and hitting 15 green in regulation. A year ago, the Loyola College graduate, 29, who works at T. Rowe Price, qualified with a 69 at Musket Ridge GC.

In the 26th Dewey Ricketts Memorial August 4 - 6 at Andrews Air Force Base East Course, the 14 - 15 and 16 - 17 age group competitiosn were each essentially three-man races. In the younger age group, Jordan Sweet, Casey Taylor and Mason Short battled for three rounds, with some pressure from Greg Bourdon. In the end Taylor's steady 73-74-74 matched Sweet's 71-73-77 before Sweet took the title in a play-off. This marks Sweet's second successive year of titleholding in WMGA junior events as he took the inaugural Charley Ridgway Junior at Falls Road last year with a sensational 68.
