Don Berry won his fourth Arthur J. Gallagher Minnesota Golf Champions title in 2003, by 10 shots. On Sunday, he won his fifth. Once again, he basically lapped the field, winning by eight.

The fourth hole at Spring Hill Golf Club is a 192-yard par-3 that plays steeply downhill. Plugging a ball in the front bunker is always an unpleasant possibility, and that was what happened to Kelly Kraft on Monday morning in the final round of the Gopher Invitational.

Spring Hill is probably the most spectacular looking golf course in the Twin Cities. It's also one of the most visually intimidating. There are several tees set 50, 60 and 70 feet above the fairways, and those elevated tees have the effect of drawing a player's eyes away from the intended targets -- that is, the fairways -- and toward all the places he doesn't want to go, such as the trees, the waste areas and the water hazards that frame the views.

Jack Holmgren, who played on Wayzta's state Class AAA championship team this spring, shot a 1-over-par 73 on Monday at St. Cloud Country Club and then won a three-hole playoff to claim medalist honors in the Boys Division at the Minnesota PGA Junior Players' Cup for the 13-15 Age Group.

Tom Jenkins, who graduated from Bemidji High School in 1996 and now lives in Maple Grove, returned to Bemidji this week and celebrated the occasion by winning the championship of the Birchmont resort tournament. Jenkins, who finished second in this tournament twice (2001 and '02), defeated Tim Skarperud 1 up in the final.

Mike Christensen, the former Minnesota State Amateur, Minnesota Golf Champions and two-time state high school champ, spent the last couple of years caddying for Kevin Streelman, one of the rising stars on the PGA Tour. It was a fairly profitable arrangement, because Streelman has made more than $2.1 million since becoming fully exempt on the tour in January of 2008.

Apparently, Minnewaska's supremacy did not end with the high school season. One of the Lakers, Allie Ostrander, who concluded her junior season with a second-place finish in the Class AA portion of the state tournament, shot a 76 at Marshall GC to win medalist honors in a Minnesota PGA Junior qualifying tournament.

In the 1973 U.S. Open, Johnny Miller and Lanny Wadkins, both playing well in front of the third-round leaders on Sunday, put on a spectacular show at Oakmont Country Club. Miller shot his famous 63 and won the tournament. Wadkins, who started the final round ever further behind than Miller, shot a 65 and tied for seventh.

David Rehfeldt couldn't have asked for a better start on Tuesday in the Minnesota Senior Open. He eagled his first hole, the par-5 10th, at The Links at Northfork and although he played the next 11 holes in 1 over par, he birdied three of his last six to shoot a 68 (4 under).

Brent Snyder claimed his fourth victory of the year -- and second in a row -- on Monday when he won the Luther Pro Series #3. The Troy Burne assistant clipped two strokes off par at Brackett's Crossing CC with a 69, which beat runner-up Don Berry of Edinburgh USA by a stroke -- and made Snyder $1,100 richer (or less poor, depending how much money he's got in the stock market).

Last week it was announced that Jim Manthis would be inducted into the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame this fall. This week, he's back playing for championships, after winning twice on Monday in the Minnesota PGA Senior Match Play tournament at North Oaks. In the morning, he defeated John Shimpach of Highland National 4&2, and he beat Dick Walters of Wayzata CC 1 up in the afternoon.

He won virtually every championship there was to win in Minnesota before he turned 50, and now it would appear that Bill Israelson is beginning a collection of senior titles. On Wednesday at Northland Country Club, he shot an even-par 71, which was the low score of the day -- by five strokes! -- as he came from behind to win the Minnesota Senior PGA Professional Championship.

Jeff Sorenson spotted the field a stroke by making a bogey on the par-5 first hole on Thursday, and it took a first-rate bunker shot to save his par at the second. After that, he took control of the Minnesota PGA Professional Championship, and by the time he reached the 600-yard 18th hole at Somerby Golf Club he was so far ahead that he could afford to hit a 3-iron off the tee.

Brandon Hartzell didn't make a bogey -- or any other score over par -- at Detroit Country Club on Sunday afternoon in the Pine to Palm final. But being bogeyless wasn't enough. His opponent, Ben Freeman, who will be a sophomore at Drake University this fall, made two eagles and was 8 under par for 16 holes as he beat Hartzell 3&2 and claimed the tournament championship.

"It felt even worse than it looked," Olivia Lansing said, after shooting a 76 at Edina Country Club on Tuesday in the second round of the Minnesota Women's State Amateur. Actually, it didn't look all that bad. It wasn't as tidy -- or as stress-free -- as her opening round of 74 on Monday, but her two-day total of 150 was good enough to give her sole possession of the lead going into Wednesday's final round.

The University of Wisconsin, which tied for second last year, will be back next month to play in the Gopher Invitational once again, and so will the Badgers' Danny Zimmerman, who was co-medalist in the 2007 tournament. Zimmerman is one of five players from the top 10 last year who will return to Spring Hill Golf Club for this year's tournament, which will be played Sept. 12-14.
