In a tense final match, Nicholas Losole III prevailed over Jake Golembiewski to win the 86th Arizona Amateur Championship at Pinnacle Peak Country Club. Golembiewski led almost the entire match, but it was Losole who prevailed at the end on the 19th hole.

Spring Hill is probably the most spectacular looking golf course in the Twin Cities. It's also one of the most visually intimidating. There are several tees set 50, 60 and 70 feet above the fairways, and those elevated tees have the effect of drawing a player's eyes away from the intended targets -- that is, the fairways -- and toward all the places he doesn't want to go, such as the trees, the waste areas and the water hazards that frame the views.

Lorens Chan of Honolulu, hung on to his second-round lead to win the TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Knight Cup on Thursday. His final round 2-under-par 70 gave him a two shot victory over Rak Cho of Brea, Calif. Szu-Han Chen of Beaumont, Calif., fired a final-round 4-under-par 68 to win by four shots. She finished with a three-day total of 2-under-par 214.

Tom Jenkins, who graduated from Bemidji High School in 1996 and now lives in Maple Grove, returned to Bemidji this week and celebrated the occasion by winning the championship of the Birchmont resort tournament. Jenkins, who finished second in this tournament twice (2001 and '02), defeated Tim Skarperud 1 up in the final.

Mike Christensen, the former Minnesota State Amateur, Minnesota Golf Champions and two-time state high school champ, spent the last couple of years caddying for Kevin Streelman, one of the rising stars on the PGA Tour. It was a fairly profitable arrangement, because Streelman has made more than $2.1 million since becoming fully exempt on the tour in January of 2008.

At the Monday conclusion to the rain-plagued RBC Canadian Open, Nathan Green (Pro V1) holed a par putt on the second hole of a sudden death playoff to capture his first career PGA TOUR victory. The 34-year-old fired a 4-under 68 in the final round to finish regulation at 18-under 270. He saved par on the first playoff hole and then tapped in for a par and his first win in 112 career PGA TOUR starts. It was fitting that Green's first victory would come in Canada. Green began his professional career on the Canadian Tour and, coincidentally, is a Toronto native (Toronto, Australia).

Iowa State golfer and Waterloo native Nathan Leary fired a final round 5-under 67 to win the 2009 Hunters Ridge Amateur by a stroke over Cedar Rapids' Nate Dunn. Leary's stellar final round featured a 4-under 32 over the final nine holes. Leary eagled the par-5 12th and birdied 15 and 16 against no bogeys to catch Dunn.

One of the Lakers, Allie Ostrander, who concluded her junior season with a second-place finish in the Class AA portion of the state tournament, shot a 76 at Marshall GC to win medalist honors in a Minnesota PGA Junior qualifying tournament.

In the 1973 U.S. Open, Johnny Miller and Lanny Wadkins, both playing well in front of the third-round leaders on Sunday, put on a spectacular show at Oakmont Country Club. Miller shot his famous 63 and won the tournament. Wadkins, who started the final round ever further behind than Miller, shot a 65 and tied for seventh.

It took 37 minutes for the longest-running individual event in Maryland State Golf Association history to grind to a conclusion at the Chevy Chase Club, June 10. This was the 88th annual Amateur championship, which ended a week-long stay when Jay Mulieri, TPC-Potomac, defeated Zach Lese, Argyle CC, 2 up.

 Amateurs continue their dominance in singles play at the 41st Annual SunTrust Tennessee Challenge Cup Matches (Presented by: Gentleman Jack). The Amateur team went into Sunday’s final play of singles matches with a comfortable 7 point lead. When it was all over they had increased their lead to 11 points which was the largest margin in recent years. The final score was Amateurs 21 ½ to Professionals 10 ½.

The National Collegiate Golf Championship (NCGC) will be played at the Silverstone Golf Course in Las Vegas, November 7-9, 2008, and for the first time, Fox Sports will be there to cover the event. Players compete in one of three divisions: Student, Faculty/Staff, or Alumni/Community. To qualify, players must participate in a Local Qualifying Tournament hosted by one of over 55 colleges and universities across the country. The NCGC Tournament is the largest collegiate golf tournament ever, and is designed for non-NCAA student athletes.

Hunters Ridge Golf Course (Marion) took home the IGA Club Team Title for the second time in three years on Monday at Sunnyside CC in Waterloo. Team members Nate Dunn, Mike Sawyer, George Gartelos and Todd Hingtgen combined to shoot a team total of 6-over 222. The host team of Sunnyside was the low Net team with a 4-under 212. In the gross competition the best three out of four 18-hole total scores counted while in the Net event, the best three of four net scores on each hole were counted.

The Island of Hilton Head prepares to host its largest golf tournament ever when the Amateur Golf Tour conducts its 2008 National Championship. A field of approximately 700 golfers from across the country will converge on the island Oct. 25-26 for the tour's national finals. The championship will be contested on seven courses, including three at Palmetto Dunes Resort, Port Royal Plantation, Oyster Reef & Robert Cupp course in Palmetto Hall.

The 2008 team, sponsored for the 14th consecutive year by HP, consists of 12 young men and 12 young women who demonstrate the ability to excel both on the golf course and in the classroom.

The United States Junior Ryder Cup Team came out strong on the second day of competition and cruised to victory at the 2008 Junior Ryder Cup, 22 to 2, at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky. The United States, who won their first ever Junior Ryder Cup in dominant fashion, built on their opening day success in the foursome and mixed four-ball matches, winning 11 of the 12 singles matches, and earning a halve in the final match.

Paula Morton of Greenbrier, Tenn., a 20.6 handicap golfer from Greenbrier, Tenn., shot a net 67 Friday to win the 2008 PGA Tour Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The 2004 Centex Villa Quest winner entered the 18th hole tied with Percy Hayes of Granbury, Texas at four-under-par. After her third shot on hole No. 18 found the lake guarding the front of the green, Morton took a drop and a penalty stroke and chipped in from 75 yards out to win the title of "World's Amateur Champion. Morton is the fourth woman champion in the 25-year history of the World Am and follows 2007 World Am champion June Wang as back-to-back female champions.

Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., took home the trophy after defeating Tiffany Lim of San Jose, Calif., on the par-4 No. 12 at Wenatchee Golf & Country Club. In the Boys Division, Charlie Hughes of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, walked into the scoring tent with a tournament total of 6-under-par 210 and walked out with a win in his first AJGA event.

One of the requirements for participating in the WSGA State Amateur is taking four days off of work.  Luckily, Ben Bendtsen III took the time off this year.  Bendsten of The Racine Country Club came out on top in a playoff Thursday to win Wisconsin's biggest amateur tournament of the year, sinking a birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff to defeat Danny Zimmerman of Hawks Landing Golf Club.

2008 VSGA SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP, Aug. 25-29, 2008 at The Homestead (Cascades Course, Old Course and Lower Cascades Course) in Hot Springs, Virginia.  The Homestead’s Cascades Course (6,679 yards, par 35-35—70) was designed by William Flynn and opened in 1923.  Match play follows two rounds of stroke play qualifying.

In the end, there was just no question as to which team was the most dominant. Under near perfect conditions at Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club in Middletown, Rhode Island, a team of seven golfers from Connecticut pieced together three superior rounds of golf to capture the 2008 New England Junior Invitational title by eight points. This marks the third straight title and the fifth in the last six years for the team from Connecticut.

The 2008 Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational will be held Sept. 18-20 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course (par-73, 6,176 yards). We will use tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 at 8 a.m., on Thursday, Sept. 18 and Friday, Sept. 19, and a shotgun start at 8 a.m. for the final round on Saturday, Sept. 20.

A Lone Star State battle came down to a playoff as Anthony Paolucci, 15, of Dallas, Texas, defeated Jordan Spieth, also a Dallas resident, on the second playoff hole to capture the boys' division at the 33rd Junior PGA Championship at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio. It was only the third playoff in the history of the Junior PGA Championship. Danielle Frasier, 15, of Encinitas, Calif., cruised to victory in the girls' division.

The 2nd Annual uPRO Kentucky Golf Foundation Pro-Am, presented by Winner's Award Group, will be conducted Tuesday, September 2 at Champion Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville. The Southern Illinois Golf Association will be hosting the SIGA Mid-AM Team Championship at Green Hills Golf Club on August 23rd.  The tournament is a 2-Person Team Championship that is open to all SIGA members, Men and Women age 45 and over with a one day format of 27 hole scramble.

Firing a 6-under-par 32-33=65, his lowest competitive round of 2008, Randy Nichols of Brookville came back and claimed the Mid Am Championship with a 137. After a first round 72, he found himself tied in 13th place with a lot of ground to make up. Consistent playing equated to seven birdies and allowed him to jump out in front of the field.

Nick Deets of Carmel and Sam Till of Fort Wayne lead the IGA Mid Amateur Championship after first round scores of 2-under-par 69. Pine Valley Country Club in Fort Wayne welcomed 98 of the state’s best amateur players over 30 years of age Thursday for the 36-hole, stroke play competition.

While many players struggled with the challenging Cantigny layout, Zach Barlow (Percy) tallied a seven-under par 281 over 72 holes to win the 78th annual Illinois State Amateur Championship. Barlow carded a 71-71 over the final 36 holes on Thursday to preserve a three-stroke victory over a hard-charging Phillip Arouca (Winnetka).

"It felt even worse than it looked," Olivia Lansing said, after shooting a 76 at Edina Country Club on Tuesday in the second round of the Minnesota Women's State Amateur.  Actually, it didn't look all that bad. It wasn't as tidy -- or as stress-free -- as her opening round of 74 on Monday, but her two-day total of 150 was good enough to give her sole possession of the lead going into Wednesday's final round.

The University of Wisconsin, which tied for second last year, will be back next month to play in the Gopher Invitational once again, and so will the Badgers' Danny Zimmerman, who was co-medalist in the 2007 tournament. Zimmerman is one of five players from the top 10 last year who will return to Spring Hill Golf Club for this year's tournament, which will be played Sept. 12-14.

Philip Ahn of Potomac, MD and Tyler Koch of Issue, MD took the two championship trophies in the 2nd Charley Ridgway Junior conducted today at Bowie Golf & Country Club. Ahn recorded 41-39--80 for a three shot margin over Brendan Peel (42-41--83) of Potomac, MD and Jonathan Carr (44-39) of Rockville, MD in the 12-13 age group. Koch registered a nine-hole tally of 41 to edge Mason Short (44) of Waldorf, MD in the 10-11 category.

Jason Cage earned the medal at Argyle Country Club in sectional qualifying for the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship, returning a bogey-free round of 33-35--68 to lead a field of 104 starters who were in search of seven places in the title-event on a mild, sunny and breezy day. Cage, from Baltimore and Chestnut Ridge Country Club, qualified for the championship last year, but admitted he had not been playing well this seasaon. "It all seemed to come together," he said of a round that ended with birdie putts of 10 and 12 feet at Nos. 4 and 8, respectively, and 16 pars, by-products of driving it straight and hitting 15 green in regulation. A year ago, the Loyola College graduate, 29, who works at T. Rowe Price, qualified with a 69 at Musket Ridge GC.

In the 26th Dewey Ricketts Memorial August 4 - 6 at Andrews Air Force Base East Course, the 14 - 15 and 16 - 17 age group competitiosn were each essentially three-man races. In the younger age group, Jordan Sweet, Casey Taylor and Mason Short battled for three rounds, with some pressure from Greg Bourdon. In the end Taylor's steady 73-74-74 matched Sweet's 71-73-77 before Sweet took the title in a play-off. This marks Sweet's second successive year of titleholding in WMGA junior events as he took the inaugural Charley Ridgway Junior at Falls Road last year with a sensational 68.

The year of 2008 will go down in Maine golf history as the Year of the Child.  In a rain soaked championship at Val Halla Golf Course on Thursday, the 2008 Maine Amateur Champion Ryan Gay and the 2008 WMSGA and SMWGA Champion Alexa Rancourt both repeated their Maine Junior Championship titles in the match play championship. Both Gay of Pittston and Rancourt of South Portland are just 17.

Tom and Charlie Winegardner, from Lothian and Old South Country Club, posted a 4-under-par 32-34--66 and won the 68th Father-Son championship of the Maryland State Golf Association at Manor CC in Rockville, Aug.6. In winning for the second time in three years, they had a two-shot margin on Steven-Steven, Jr. Delmar, from Montgomery CC, who had 36-32--68 for the par 35-35--70, 6,326-yard course. A field of 84 teams participated on a warm, sunny day.

With his victory today in the 50th NJSGA Senior Amateur Championship at Crestmont Country Club, Allan Small of Fairmount Country Club becomes the first golfer in NJSGA history to win the NJSGA Amateur Championship, Mid-Amateur Championship and Senior Amateur Championship. “I am just honored to play in NJSGA events will all you guys,” Small said in accepting the championship trophy. Indeed, he has been on the competitive scene for a long time. He first won the Mid-Amateur in 1986 and again in 2006, and won the State Amateur in 2004 at Spring Brook. Completing the NJSGA “Amateur Slam” is a big accomplishment for the 56 year-old golfer, whose career has been plagued by lingering injuries.

See whether you can spot a trend in what has happened locally in this golf season:  Barrington High, which plays at Rhode Island Country Club, won the Interscholastic League championship. David McAndrew, who is from RICC, won the State Amateur. Matt Broome, who plays out of RICC, won the New England Amateur. Eddie Hjerpe, one of the Barrington High stars, finished third the other day in an American Junior Golf Association event in Mattapoisett, Mass.

Wes McNulty of Pine Bluff was 5-under par for 14 holes defeating Allen McFerran of Fort Smith 5 & 4 to win the 2008 ASGA Men's Match PLay Championship. McNulty defeated Eddie Craven of Little Rock 3 & 2 in the morning semi-finals while McFerran defeated Razorback teammate Jason Cuthbertson of Conway 4 & 3.

The Cleveland Golf Company is heavily involved in player development with support to junior, collegiate and developmental tour golf. For developmental tour players, Monday qualifying for the Nationwide Tour is a step in the right direction. The Cleveland Golf Tour is intended to provide an alternative event for players missing the cut in a Monday Qualifier. The Cleveland Golf Tour will offer 8 competitive, 36-hole events scheduled around the Monday Qualifiers. Each event will be held on the Monday Qualifying course. The first event will be held July 29-30 at Tiburon GC in Omaha, Nebraska.

New Haven, CT, July 22, 2008 – The Course at Yale held the first of two qualifiers in the state of Connecticut for 108th United States Amateur Championship. With a field of 78 players only three will find themselves advancing to Pinehurst Resort and Country Club,
Village of Pinehurst, NC; the site for the Championship.
After a 36-hole qualifier Eric Mina from Fremont, CA led the field on a par 70, 6739 yard course, with a 136 (-4) score. In second, Reed Howard from Hilton Head Island, SC finished with a 139 (-1). The third and final spot was awarded to Mu Hu from Champions Gate, FL with a 141 (+1). The qualifiers are as follows:
1. Eric Mina – Fremont, CA
2. Reed Howard – Hilton Head Island, SC
3. Mu Hu – Champions Gate, FL
1st Alternate – Ryan Leahey, Orange, CT
2nd Alternate – Jim Mueller, Altamont, NY
The Connecticut State Golf Association will host the second qualifier for the 108th U.S. Amateur at The Black Hall Club on August 4, 2008. The United States Amateur Championship will be played at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club, Village of Pinehurst, NC on August 18-24, 2008.

The 2008 Junior Girl’s Championship was held at the Brandywine Country Club, in Wilmington, Delaware, July 16th & 17th. Christine Shimel, of DuPont CC, claimed her 4th consecutive Junior Girl’s title against some of the best girl’s in Delaware, with scores of 75-73, 148. This year's event had the most participation that we've seen in recent years; 10 girls competed ranging from 13 years old to 17 years old. Shimel also qualified for the USGA Junior Girl's Championship!

The University of Arkansas had 46 first-year student-athletes named to the 2008 Southeastern Conference Freshmen Academic Honor Roll the league office recently announced. Highlighted by nine women’s swimming and diving team members, Arkansas’ 46 selections ranked as the fifth-best in the league this year. South Carolina topped the list with 67 selections followed by Florida with 66, Alabama with 55 and Kentucky with 52.

The high school and college teammates estimated they played 150 rounds of golf together, but Friday’s two were for the most on the line, to decide the 108th Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship.  When all was said and done after 35 holes of golf, University of Colorado junior Luke Symons defeated Buff senior Derek Tolan, 2 and 1, to win the title.

Eric Stromstad a UMC senior majoring in Golf Facilities and Turf Systems (GFTS) was awarded the North Dakota Golf Association Scholarship. The scholarship was presented by Bruce Kary of the Dickenson Parks and Recreation department last week at the association’s annual meeting. Stromstad is the first UMC student to receive this award.
